Each recipe has an English and a translated version. We think following a recipe in a different language (either written or spoken with lots of actions and practical demonstrations!) is a fun way to learn a few words in a different language.
Cooking is also an interesting way to learn more about food from around the world and how people live in other countries. It’s an enjoyable and social experience and sitting down to eat a meal together is a great way to spend time catching up with friends and family – or to make new friends.
Use these recipes in language lessons, after-school cooking clubs or at home. We’ve also provided suggestions for using these recipes as the focus for community cooking events that encourage children, young people and their families to learn about languages and how people live in other countries.
You could hold an international event involving several different countries or choose one country (and therefore one recipe and language) to focus on. Click on the links to download the recipes and some Cook Around the World activity ideas.
Each recipe has symbols showing information such as, how long it takes to cook, any common food allergies to be aware of and if recipes are vegetarian.
