Excitement is building for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Let's Get Cooking has linked up with DCSF Languages and the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee to produce a range of resources inspired by some of the countries taking part. We’ve produced recipes inspired by seven countries, with an English version and a translated version of each.

Cook in another language

Following a recipe in a different language (either written or spoken with lots of actions and practical demonstrations!) is a fun way to learn a few words in a different language.  Cooking is also an interesting way to learn more about food from around the world and how people live in other countries. It’s an enjoyable and social experience and sitting down to eat a meal together is a great way to spend time catching up with friends and family – or to make new friends.

The Let's Get Cooking Around the World recipes can be used in language lessons, at after-school cooking clubs or you could add these recipes to your school menu and hold a special London 2012- inspired week of meals.

London 2012-inspired community events

International Olympic Day is on 23 June, so you could decorate your dining room with flags, maps and words in different languages – you could even produce a menu in French, Spanish or Portuguese (with English translation!)

We’ve also provided suggestions for using these recipes as the focus for community cooking events that encourage children, young people and their families to learn about languages and how people live in other countries.
