Children across the UK could be learning Hindi while cooking Chicken Rogan Josh, or Spanish while preparing a One-Pot Vegetable Chilli from Mexico, as part of the London 2012 education programme ‘Let’s Get Cooking Around the World’.
The project, which is part of Get Set - the official London 2012 education programme, was launched today by LOCOG Board Member Jonathan Edwards at Eldon Junior School in Edmonton, London.
Led by the School Food Trust, ‘Let’s Get Cooking Around the World’ is a project that provides free, healthy recipes inspired by different countries and encourages schools to use them to teach languages.
A Year 4 pupil from Eldon Junior School said: “We really enjoyed making smoothies with Jonathan Edwards, we learnt Portuguese at the same time and he even showed us his medals! It’s a really fun way to learn about the Olympic and Paralympic values, it was a really great lesson.”
The project is part of the wider ‘Let’s Get Cooking’ programme, a national network of healthy cooking clubs for children and parents, mainly held outside school hours. So far, more than 3,500 schools across England have joined the programme, which aims to teach new cooking skills to more than 1.1 million children and adults by 2012. The recipes are available through this network, and also to the 13,000 schools signed up to the London 2012 Get Set website, the free learning resource for 3-19 year olds to find out more about the Games and explore the Olympic and Paralympics values.
Jonathan Edwards said: “The development of language skills couldn’t be more important as we prepare to welcome the world to the Games in 2012. Hosting of the Games gives us a great opportunity to use links with the 205 competing nations to inspire young people to develop their language skills. ‘Let’s Get Cooking Around the World’ is taking that opportunity one step further by incorporating cooking and healthy eating into an exciting programme that I’m sure will make the development of language skills in young people fun and exciting.”
Rob Rees MBE, Chair of the School Food Trust said: “Cooking is a fun and practical way to learn. For example, by making our delicious Mango and Banana Smoothie from Brazil, you can learn a few words in Portuguese, understand how Portuguese explorers colonised parts of South America which links to Geography and History lessons, teach Maths and Numeracy in a practical way by measuring liquids – and learn about healthy eating, teamwork and social skills! We’ve also provided some great ideas for exciting community cooking events on our website, that schools can use to engage parents and the wider community, which is what Let's Get Cooking is all about.”
