Let’s Get Cooking – One Year On

It’s hard to believe that nearly a year has passed since Let’s Get Cooking received a £20 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund’s Well Being programme, to set up a national network of 5,000 cooking clubs for children, parents and the wider community.

In the last twelve months we’ve signed up 937 schools to Let’s Get Cooking, trained 671 adults in food safety and cookery demonstrating, run Start-Up events for more than 2000 children and adults and recruited 21 new staff.

During the first three years of the programme, we’re writing to every school in England to invite them to apply to join Let’s Get Cooking.  We’ve already written to more than 6,500 schools across 57 Local Authorities and, in most areas, places have filled within minutes of online registration opening.  We have a waiting list of more than 500 schools, which reflects a real need for this type of programme.

We have been successful in targeting schools in areas of higher deprivation as 44% of schools signed up to Let’s Get Cooking have a high number of pupils eligible for free school meals.

We’re really looking forward to Year 2, when more clubs come on board and hundreds of clubs will start cooking.
