Seven experts from Derby City Council’s ‘b-You’ programme learned how to train families on basic cooking skills, healthy recipes and making food from scratch on a budget with the national Let’s Get Cooking network.
Over two days, the group learned how to demonstrate cooking a full range of healthy recipes including breakfasts, soups, bread, fajitas, dips, salads, healthy curries and stir fries, as well as techniques for safe chopping, peeling and storage.
Jane Pond, from Let’s Get Cooking in the East Midlands, said: “We had a fantastic day with the team in Derby and I know they’re looking forward to using healthy cooking training in their work with local adults and children.
“Being able to cook healthy, tasty meals from scratch is a really important part of eating a balanced diet – you can cut down on the fat, sugar and salt that you often find in ready meals, save money and have fun! More than half of the people we work through our national cooking club network say they eat a healthier diet as a result of learning to cook, so to coin a phrase - the proof of the pudding really is in the eating.”
Rob Smithers, b-You Coordinator, said: “The training has provided the b-You team with the skills needed to help people in Derby learn about healthy cooking in a fun environment.
“The team has an increased confidence in working with people from all walks of life to help them look at their diets and how they prepare meals for themselves and their families.
“The key to the training was that Jane and Rebecca from Let’s Get Cooking ensured that learning to cook was fun, exciting and enjoyable but most importantly that anyone could do it.”
