Ormskirk School’s last minute summer holiday cooking session

Ormskirk School in West Lancashire bent over backwards to help publicise the good news about our BIG Lottery funding by organising an impromptu Let’s Get Cooking session – two days after school broke up for the holidays!

Thank you to all the Let’s Get Cooking club members and helpers who gave up their well-deserved holiday time to come into school and cook for the BBC North West Tonight TV cameras.

What's been cooking in their kitchen?

Ormskirk School’s Let’s Get Cooking club has been busy. They’ve made smoothies for staff to raise money for charity and for parents’ Review Day as well as cooking and preparing food for an afternoon Strawberry Tea party at the local residential home for older people.

At the Strawberry Tea party, each club member was responsible for looking after one adult each and this really helped with confidence building as well as helping older people to see young people in a positive light. One of the guests even donated a book of old recipes to the club, which the children love.

Club members have cooked and tasted new food, which is what Let’s Get Cooking is all about!  When the club cooked pasta, garlic bread, salad and dressings, many teenagers insisted they would hate olive oil, lemon and balsamic vinegar dressing saying it looked ‘vile’. The expressions on their faces changed when they tried it and they said it was ‘actually quite nice’. Everyone took a small pot of each home with salad and bread and they all loved it.

They’ve also made fruit muffins, Caribbean fruit salad, gingerbread men, lemon cheese cake, couscous salad and barbeque food.

A taste of success

Club mentor, Brenda Caslake, said, “We’ve never been short of children. I get children coming to me all the time saying ‘Can I join the club?’ and every week children pass me in the corridor and tell me they made a dish at home with the recipes they’ve been given. Pupils enjoy the hands on approach to trying new food and having the opportunity to work with others. Next year we hope to expand the club and get more parents involved and invite outside guests to the club. We would also like to grow herbs and vegetables in our garden plot. It’s an exciting time ahead.”
